Ultrasound uses sound-echo technology to generate images of structures inside the body. The transducer head contains a crystal that uses the piezoelectric effect to convert electrical energy into high frequency sound waves, which are sent into the body and subsequently reflect to produce an image. Whether a tissue reflects or transmits the sound wave is determined by its acoustic impedance, or resistance to sound waves. Fluid transmits well whereas bone reflects sound waves. Soft tissue structures such as muscle, tendon and ligaments are imaged well by ultrasound technology. The quality of the image is affected by the training of the operator, the capability of the machine and the resolution of the probe. Ultrasound emits no radiation or electrical current, and produces images in real-time. Hence it not only demonstrates form (what a structure looks like), but also function (how a structure appears as it performs).

Diagnostic ultrasound does not rely on ionising radiation and in the hands of a qualified Sonographer is one of the safest imaging modalities currently available.
Due to the nature of the imaging capability it is particularly suitable to image soft tissues around the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle. The technology does not allow images to be captured below bones. Therefore most problems associated with the spine are not suitable for imaging with this technology.
There are 2 areas which have a large impact on the quality and accuracy of any ultrasound scan. These are the training of the personnel completing the scan and the capabilities of the machine.
Our 2 lead clinicians at Abacus Physiotherapy Ltd have achieved recognise gold standard training. This cannot be said of everyone offering this service and your only safeguard as a member of the public is to ask if the person scanning you has a minimum of a CASE approved post graduate certificate in musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning. All of our scanning team have a minimum of this qualification and utilise a high frequency 18 MHZ probe, Doppler capable machine. This high end portable machine is very different from most devices which are currently used in our sector.

What should I expect during my initial consultation?
